Youth Activities in Petersfield

Since the demise of the Howard Mallett Centre in Sturton Street, organised youth activities have been in short supply in Petersfield. A junior youth club (9 to 13-year-olds) has operated sporadically and is currently run by one volunteer plus support from parents, in a church hall.

PACT is pushing our local authorities to put the current club on a proper footing with a management committee, child safety procedures, funding arrangements, equipment and storage) and to provide positive activities in appropriate venues for other age groups (e.g. 13 to 17-year-olds).

We feel that the community can only benefit from investing in its young people. The powers that be can afford it too because a significant sum of money is paid every year to Parkside Community College , specifically as compensation to the local community for the loss of the Howard Mallett Centre.

PACT recently attended a Petersfield Peer Research presentation by Young People's Consultation and Participation. Some of their issues are:

  • the price of children's cinema tickets
  • fear of crime / bullying at the proposed skateboard park at Jesus Green
  • access to sports activities
  • the desire for an (affordable) ice rink
  • affordable hang-out spaces, coffee bars, etc.
We are represented on the recently set up Petersfield Community Facilities Forum which is looking at these and other issues concerning young people and community facilities for all age groups.

If you are a young person, we want to hear from you about these, or any other issue you may have. We also welcome young members. See our membership form.
