Cambridge Online is a unique groundbreaking community internet project, that has won widespread acclaim, awards and recognition for its unusual achievements.

The main objective of Cambridge Online formerly known as Cambridge Online City (COLC) is the creation and delivery of community information, internet access, and guidance and training in using new and emerging technologies. Cambridge Online seeks to involve the whole community in these activities, developing key skills, and ensuring equality of access to local and world-wide information networks. Cambridge Online works extensively with voluntary bodies, whose activities are enhanced by our own services, and seeks particularly to support groups of people who might otherwise be marginalized or disadvantaged by not being part of the information society.

Cambridge Online is a thriving non-profit partnership. It is registered in England and Wales under the Companies Act 1985 as a private company limited by guarantee (No. 3619629); application for charitable status is in progress. Cambridge Online has been funded by grants from a variety of sources, including the National Lottery Charities Board (see sponsors, many of which contribute facilities, staff time or professional services).

Cambridge Online's activities are overseen by its Executive Committee representing a wide range of talents, perspectives and interests that span the public, private and voluntary sectors. Its various projects are coordinated and undertaken by a team of Cambridge Online's part-time staff, in collaboration with staff at each access point, together with a substantial community of volunteers who help with training.

Cambridge Online was established as Cambridge Online City by Anne Campbell MP in 1995 (see project history), in order to increase access to public information through the use of the internet. It was clear even in 1995 that, as the internet took off, those without the appropriate skills or access would be left behind. Cambridge Online works to ensure that opportunities to develop relevant skills and use high quality equipment are available to the whole community. A strength of the project has been the partnership of diverse groups and organisations committed to this objective, harnessing the support of local businesses, public authorities, voluntary groups as well as dedicated individuals.
