Poppers

The Drug

Amyl nitrite is called `poppers' or `rush'. It was discovered in 1852. Doctors would give it to people to treat them for chest pains because of heart problems. Poppers cause the blood vessels in the body to enlarge so the blood can flow quickly around the heart and relieve pain.

The drug comes in small bottles and the vapour from the liquid is breathed in through the nose or mouth.

What it does to the mind and body

Once you breath in poppers the effects are almost instant, starting within 7-10 seconds and lasting for 30-60 seconds. As you breath in there is a `rush' this happens because your blood vessels expand, your heart beats quicker so the blood rushes to your brain, you face flushes and your head and neck perspire.

The Law and Amyl Nitrite

Amyl nitrite (poppers) is classed as a pharmacy medicine, under the Medicines Act.
