Working with young people living at the Women's Refuge. Female volunteers only.
This is an opportunity to work with young people living at the Women's refuge in Cambridge. The refuge is a shelter for women and their children (2-10yrs) only. It is a women only building therefore only female volunteers can be included in the group. Volunteers plan activities for the children including a planned arts and craft project and sometimes baking or a cooking activity. If you would like to work with children in a team, meet new people and put your own creative ideas into practice - this is for you! Volunteers will be encouraged and supported to lead the activities after training.
Youth Action are currently hosting Millennium Volunteers in Cambridge City and South Cambridgeshire. Each volunteer has the chance to work towards the Millennium Volunteers Award on completion of a number of hours. Volunteers are supported in their personal Action Plans and given the chance to have their own personal mentor to support them in their voluntary placement.

The Refuge is a shelter for women and their children only and is a women only building but male volunteers can be involved in the work as all sessions are held in the Youth Action offices. The aim of the group is to provide the young people with opportunities to leave the setting of the institution and build informal peer support networks. The activities organised range from trips to Laserquest to video and baking evenings. Volunteers will support the young people to design, manage and review the activities programmes of the project.

A great opportunity to make yourself heard in the community. Peer Education involves young people talking to other young people about issues that matter to them. The group decides what their message or issue is (e.g. drugs, sexual health, self-image etc) and how to get this across to their peers (through drama, role-play, presentations, workshops, games etc). Volunteers will work in a team and build an effective support network at the group's residential weekend. There are also chances to gain presentational and marketing skills! Depending on what you wanted to do - you may be able to design a website or even make your own video - whatever you think will 'work' with other young people.
Overall - you decide as a volunteer exactly what you want to say and how you'll say it!
