The Clubhouse model of rehabilitation is based on an original concept developed in the 1940's in New York. When people were discharged from hospital, they found that there was little or no support in the community, so they set up their own support network.
It was realised that whist people were in the acute phases of their illness, clinics, medications and therapies were available. However, what was missing was the support to overcome the disabling long-term consequences of their illness - such as poverty, unemployment and social isolation. Central to the Clubhouse model is the belief that people who experience complex mental health problems are entitled to meaningful activity, respect and dignity. Integration within the community is not only possible, but is a natural human right. The Cambridge Clubhouse belongs to a world-wide network which aims to develop the potential of its members by encouraging them to take responsibility in all aspects of running the Clubhouse. There are 35 Clubhouses throughout the United Kingdom, and 360 Clubhouses world-wide. See International Center for Clubhouse Development. |
