Cambridge is a small city in eastern England (East Anglia). The city's area is 16 square miles or 41 square kilometres. The population in 2011 (UK Census), excluding students, was 123,867 (including 24,488 students). More than 3,500,000 tourists visit the city each year. So there is a widely fluctuating population throughout the year.
Cambridge lies on the River Cam, a tributary of the Ouse. It is surrounded by farmland, with flat, peaty fens to the north, and chalk hills to the south. It is the county town of Cambridgeshire. Nearby towns and cities include Ely, Huntingdon, Newmarket, Bedford and Peterborough. Cambridge is about 50 miles (80 kilometers) north of London.
